Buccaneers claim title
By Nick Wade

GEELONG’S Bay City Buccaneers are Junior Vic Bowl champions after pulling off a stunning upset over undefeated Croydon Rangers in Sunday’s grand final.

The Buccaneers, who lost twice to the high-scoring Rangers during the season, held their nerve in a defensive struggle to win 16 to 14, with only a two-point conversion separating the sides.

The Buccaneers scored on their opening offensive drive and then returned an interception for a touchdown, which opened up an early 16-0 lead, a lead they never surrendered.

Central to Bay City’s victory was a revamped offence that the Rangers had not seen all year.

The Buccaneers used this new offence to beat Berwick Miners in the semi final.

Tom Bean was named Most Valuable Player for his efforts at quarter back, running back and line backer.

Your Say
“Congratulations boys!!! One of the best upset wins this year! Well done Buccs on an awesome year!!”

The Buccaneers have now completed the championship double in 2011 after the senior side also defeated the Rangers earlier in the year.

The Buccaneers are starting their recruiting campaign now with the hope of entering two senior teams next season in both the Gridiron Victoria division one and two competitions.

Buccaneers are 2011 Junior Vic Bowl CHAMPIONS!

Junior Buccaneers Vic Bowl Champions

The Buccaneers have completed the double in 2011 as the Juniors topped off their season by defeating the Croydon Rangers 16-14 in a very close game.

Emulating the senior team who also defeated the Rangers to claim their first ever Vic Bowl, the young Buccaneers stormed to a 16-0 lead early in the game behind a big offensive drive for a score and a “pick 6″ interception returned for a touchdown.

Despite a fightback from the Rangers, the Buccaneers held strong into the second half and blocked a thrilling 2 point conversion attempt late in the game that may have sent it to overtime.

Congratulations to Vic Bowl MVP Tom Bean and also overall League Offensive and Defensive MVP Ricky Young who were presented with their awards after the game.

Well done to the coaching staff of Marty, Layke, Jordan, Chris and Megan and the whole Junior Buccaneers team on a fantastic season and to the whole club by securing both championships in 2011.

Buccaneers advance to the 2011 Junior Vic Bowl!

The Junior Buccaneers will look to emulate the senior team in 2011 and win the Vic Bowl!

The young side has defeated the Miners 30-14 in the preliminary final and will now face the Croydon Rangers in the decider – the same club the seniors defeated back in August to claim the title.

The Junior Vic Bowl is this Sunday, 11th December at Ranger Field in Springfield Avenue Croydon! Be sure to get along and support the young team!

2011 Junior Preliminary Final

The Buccaneers have finished 2nd in the Junior Gridiron Victoria standings and will host the Berwick Miners this Saturday, 3rd December at the Cove, off Bogong Street in Corio.

Kick off is at 1pm.

The two teams played each other in the final game of the regular season last week in a thrilling match that went down to the very final play – a hail mary caught in the endzone and a Buccaneers win.

Get down and support the Junior Buccaneers as we look to make the Vic Bowl and emulate the championship winning season of the senior team.
